STOP The Closure Of Stirling Rd & Learning Curve Day Centres!

Public Lobby & Protest

Monday 26th November
5.30 - 7pm

Please Come and Join us to STOP this direct ATTACK on the Most Vulnerable People in OUR Community!

There has been coverage of the proposed closures of Stirling Rd Day Centre & Learning Curve Centre in The Ealing Gazette:

The services are provided to promote and support learning disabled people to become more independent and access their community through community-based projects & activities.

Attendees of the centres will see their daily activities curtailed, the centres closed (and as seems most likely sold off) and are to be given a 'personal budget' to 'buy' their own day activities. Since this will inevitably cost them much more than at present they will see less and less of the 'outside world' and their daily lives (not to mention friendships built up over years) will dissolve.

Ealing Disabled Community Shocked As Two Day Centres for the Learning Disabled Are Proposed To Close and over 100 jobs are Put At Risk.

In shocking news revealed of late the London Borough of Ealing has made proposals to cabinet for swingeing cuts across most departments.
As is common few managerial posts are affected but most damaging of all is the proposal to axe two Day Centres for those with disabilities.

The Stirling Road Day Centre in Stirling Rd, Acton has served those with learning disabilities for more than 30 years.

Stirling Road Centre is a day service, meeting the needs of adults with a learning disability. It provides a wide range of services, which include sport and leisure, health promotion, community based projects, work-based training and travel assistance.

The service is provided to promote and support people to become more independent and access their community through community-based projects.

Attendees of this centre will see their daily activities curtailed, the centre closed (and as seems most likely sold off) and are to be given a 'personal budget' to 'buy' their own day activities. Since this will inevitably cost them much more than at present they will see less and less of the 'outside world' and their daily lives (not to mention friendships built up over years) will dissolve.

Learning Curve centre, based in Roslin Rd, Acton, provides training for adults with learning disabilities. Their aim is to help people obtain the skills needed to get into work. It is a fully accredited training centre and provides training in basic skills, preparation for work, job seeking skills, office practice, retail and information technology. Learning Curve also supports disabled adults in work and can help find work experience placements. It runs a community café called Café Eat, which earns money through external catering.

The attendees of this centre will be similarly given a 'budget' to purchase their own activities & services and be 'signposted' to getting services 'in the social care market'.

A disgrace (especially for a Labour council).

All Is NOT Lost... Not Just Yet... So - MARCH In March!!

So the news is thus...

After a gallant fight against the managers and bureacrats at the London Borough of Ealing that raged for many months and witnessed countless demonstrations & lobbies in Ealing and across the borough and with the invaluable support of all of the main campaigning groups locally The Albert Dane Centre for disabled adults & The Links Project for adults with a significant mental health disability will both be closed as of April 4th 2011.

SHAME on the Labour council for going down this tragic road. SHAME on the councillors for BLINDLY following a course set by service managers to throw away valuable services for the residents of this borough. SHAME on managers such as Claire Hutnell & Cheryl Batt for proposing such a closure (in the case of Albert Dane), a service that will close leaving many disabled people in the area shut in their homes and isolated from the community.

One hopes this maybe the last of it. But this writer believes there is worse yet to come.

S.A.D. Ealing will continue to campaign alongside other campaigning groups locally to highlight vociferously this cruel campaign of hate against frontline services for the most vulnerable in our society.

We are hearing of decimation in Ealing Council's Children's services with countless jobs lost, Adult Social Services is also taking a big hit, Social Workers will face an even larger workload with support staff posts disappearing widely in recent cuts. The council Park Ranger service has been slashed with only 4 soon across the entire borough - imagine what Ealing's famed parks will look like soon; and how safe will they be?
That alongside cuts upcoming within the local Health Trust that will affect how NHS services are delivered locally.

Which is why come the end of this month we need to send a message - to our council but moreover to this cruel CON-Dem government that these cuts are immoral, vicious and plainly wrong!

One can barely call them a government, really they are just a bunch of millionaires lobbying for their corparate friends so they can privatise pretty much everything. Well Dave & Nick some things just can't and SHOULDN'T be run as a profit making exercise. Health, Disabled services, Social services...

We want them, we need them and we are proud of them and it makes us a civilised society by doing so.

So if you want to remain a civilised society and all this cutting of frontline services makes you sick...

MARCH in March to save them!!

Let's make this the biggest demonstration of public anger EVER!

Saturday 26th March from 11am Victoria Embankment

Marching to a rally at Hyde Park

Words From The Wise...

Words direct from an Albert Dane service user...

'This is a very essential service for the disabled in the Ealing Acton and Southall area and should not be cut by anybody for any reason. This service is essential for carers of the sick and disabled in these areas too. Why else would I pay my taxes.
SAVE ALBERT DANE, OUR SOULS cannot be bought by giving us a personnel budget.
Give a man an education and he can live his life. Or you can feed him for one day/week, this would keep him happy for one reason you've blind sided him.
Feed them for life by training them.
Don't be sad Save Albert Dane centre.
You know it makes sense...'

Little more needs to be said...

AGAIN! Let's Make Our VOICES Heard! December 14th Ealing Town Hall 5pm

Tuesday December 14th from 5pm at Ealing Town Hall, W5

On November 30th Ealing's Labour led Council voted for closure.

There is now a two-week ‘cooling off’ period during which the opposition parties have ‘called in’ the matter to be discussed before a full council meeting on the 14th December. A representative of the S.A.D. Ealing campaign will speak directly.
The (large!) Save Albert Dane petition will also be presented.

If we can fill the pavement outside the Town Hall with a loud & seething mass of disgust against these disgraceful cuts then we will be sending a VERY STRONG message to the Labour Councillors that they need to be back where they should be; in opposition to such proposals - NOT proposing them.

The ballot box does not forget...

Let's Make Our VOICES Heard! NOVEMBER 30th Ealing Town Hall 5pm

TUESDAY 30th NOVEMBER from 5pm at Ealing Town Hall.

With the help of members of Ealing Unison, Ealing Alliance For Public Services (EAPS) and other supporters, we will be lobbying the Ealing Council Cabinet meeting which will give a final vote on whether the Albert Dane Day Centre & the Links Project will close or not.
They will also vote on the 'Star Chamber' recommendations from last week which proposed the axing of up to 320 or more posts from Ealing's staff team. Children's services were particularly badly affected with frontline posts being 'deleted'.
If we can fill the pavement outside the Town Hall with a loud & seething mass of disgust against these disgraceful cuts then we will be sending a VERY STRONG message to the Labour Councillors that they need to be back where they should be; in opposition to such proposals - NOT proposing them. As was mentioned earlier, the ballot box does not forget...
