The FIGHT Continues! Lobby Ealing Town Hall Thurs Dec 23rd 5pm...

The fight to save The Albert Dane Day Centre for disabled adults (and The Links Project for adults with mental health issues) continues!

Due to the opposition on Ealing Council having 'called in' the closure proposals for further investigation the issue will be debated at the Council Scrutiny Comittee.
This will take place on THURSDAY DECEMBER 23RD 7PM.

We will therefore be lobbying & protesting outside Ealing Town Hall from 5pm Thursday December 23rd.

All welcome! Join us and make your voices heard in protest at these cruel closures of services for the most vulnerable in our community.

The ballot box does not forget...

If you disagree with such wanton destruction of frontline community services for children & vulnerable adults in Ealing then JOIN US!

AGAIN! Let's Make Our VOICES Heard! December 14th Ealing Town Hall 5pm

Tuesday December 14th from 5pm at Ealing Town Hall, W5

On November 30th Ealing's Labour led Council voted for closure.

There is now a two-week ‘cooling off’ period during which the opposition parties have ‘called in’ the matter to be discussed before a full council meeting on the 14th December. A representative of the S.A.D. Ealing campaign will speak directly.
The (large!) Save Albert Dane petition will also be presented.

If we can fill the pavement outside the Town Hall with a loud & seething mass of disgust against these disgraceful cuts then we will be sending a VERY STRONG message to the Labour Councillors that they need to be back where they should be; in opposition to such proposals - NOT proposing them.

The ballot box does not forget...

Let's Make Our VOICES Heard! NOVEMBER 30th Ealing Town Hall 5pm

TUESDAY 30th NOVEMBER from 5pm at Ealing Town Hall.

With the help of members of Ealing Unison, Ealing Alliance For Public Services (EAPS) and other supporters, we will be lobbying the Ealing Council Cabinet meeting which will give a final vote on whether the Albert Dane Day Centre & the Links Project will close or not.
They will also vote on the 'Star Chamber' recommendations from last week which proposed the axing of up to 320 or more posts from Ealing's staff team. Children's services were particularly badly affected with frontline posts being 'deleted'.
If we can fill the pavement outside the Town Hall with a loud & seething mass of disgust against these disgraceful cuts then we will be sending a VERY STRONG message to the Labour Councillors that they need to be back where they should be; in opposition to such proposals - NOT proposing them. As was mentioned earlier, the ballot box does not forget...

Remember, Remember The 30th Of November!!

Plenty has been happening in the S.A.D. Ealing camp.

A digest:
  • S.A.D. Ealing Activists have been busy lobbying Ealing Labour Councillors at their surgeries. Not all Councillors have been forthcoming in their support and a few have openly said that because they are recently elected (ie. May this year); they are somewhat scared to vote against the whip. The ballot box will remember them was the reply...
  • One Ealing Labour Councillor was completely unaware of his role as a Deputy Children & Adult Services Portfolio holder! It is very worrying that these are the people that will be voting next week on these closures & cuts and they seem to have NO IDEA about what they are voting on.
Perhaps he should get a diary?!?
  • Protests against the proposed closures have been held across the borough and the amount of signatories to the petition has swelled yet again.
  • The MOST IMPORTANT DATE is next TUESDAY 30th NOVEMBER from 5pm at Ealing Town Hall.       With the help of members of Ealing Unison and other supporters, we will be lobbying the Ealing Council Cabinet meeting which will give a final vote on whether the Albert Dane Day Centre & the Links Project will close or not. They will also vote on the 'Star Chamber' recommendations from last week which proposed the axing of up to 320 or more posts from Ealing's staff team.
  • So we plainly NEED your support!
  •  On November 11th a packed meeting was held at Acton High School to formally begin the Ealing Alliance For Public Services, a coalition of trade unions and interested groupings from across the borough to oppose & resist cuts, service closures, reductions and privatisations of essential services for the community (of which S.A.D. Ealing is very proud to be a part of).
  • Ealing Alliance For Public Services will be staging it's first anti cuts protest outside Ealing Town Hall on Saturday 11th December 1pm - 4pm. Come and show your disgust!

BRIDGET FOX - A Eulogy

BRIDGET FOX

    06.09.1960 – 23.09.2010

A Eulogy

Bridget (or ‘Bridie’) attended the Albert Dane Centre but 4 years ago chose to leave, so as to stay at home with her husband Henry when he became ill.
She came back to the centre in February 2010 following Henry’s sad death.

Bridie was very well liked at the centre and made a lot of friends there. She fitted into to our little community like ‘a hand into a glove’.

She said the centre “gave her a reason to get up in the mornings”, as without it she would be at home alone as she didn't expect her children to give up their lives to be with her twenty four hours a day.

She joined in everything she was capable of, went to all the sessions she could. She loved scrabble, up words and animals of the world. She was a very sociable person around the centre and never let the troubles in her life get her down. She was happy coming to the centre and seeing all her friends, they meant an awful lot to her.

When Ealing Council’s Social Services Department told us they proposed to close the centre she was very upset and lost alot of her ‘sparkle’. She vowed along with the rest of us she would fight against the closure because she “didn't want to be stuck indoors 7 days a week, just waiting for the day to pass so she could go to bed and get the day over, as she did when her husband passed away”.

This is what she told me on the last day I saw her on our transport bus that brings us to the centre.

Bridget leaves behind 2 daughters, Sarah and Amy, a step-daughter Joyce and a grandson Oliver.
She is also survived by her  sisters Anna and Noreen.

She will be enormously missed at the Centre by all the service users and staff.

R.I.P.

Bridget (‘Bridie’) Fox

The Lobby Of Ealing Council 19.10.10 And Further News & Links...

On Tuesday 19th October 30 or more campaigners from the the S.A.D. Ealing Campaign to save Ealing Daycare converged on the steps of Ealing Town Hall to demonstrate against the closure of The Albert Dane Day Centre for disabled adults and The Links Project for adults with significant mental health issues.

In appalling weather service users in their wheelchairs; one who almost sustained an injury whilst getting himself of a bus when the ramp didn't work correctly, demonstrated loudly and proudly to save the services that 'gave them their lives back'.
This was in stark contrast to the ruling Labour group of councillors who refused to come out of their warm offices above to speak to their constituents despite being invited to do so by speakers on the megaphone.

Together with staff from several services across the borough of Ealing, members of several trade unions and political groupings and campaigners they used their loud hailer to show that they were not giving in to the calllous closure proposals by Ealing Council.

There were speeches from services users and staff explaining the impact of the closure and why they were lobbying. This had a big impact on the general public and indeed the Ealing staff trooping out of the adjacent Perceval House council offices; many of whom came up to our stall to discuss the issues and then sign the ever growing petition to stop the closure of the services. Politicians from the Conservatives (who's Cllr Stafford had brought up the evenings council debating motion against the closure program) and Liberal Democrats who both oppose the closure proposals came to speak to the campaigners.

The lobby then went into the public gallery to watch the debate on the opposing motion.
  • Cllr Stafford (Con, Cleveland Ward, Shadow Cabinet - Adult Services and Health), in raising the motion to stop the closure; spoke of the importance and need for such a centre to provide for such vulnerable people and mentioned the S.A.D. Ealing campaign and it's success so far, the coverage in the local Southall Gazette and the vast amount of correspondence and emails that has been recieved on the issue by council officials and fellow Councillors.
  • Cllr Reen (Con, Northfield, Shadow Cabinet - Regeneration), a former Conservative Adult Social Services Portfolio holder in the previous administration spoke movingly of the way the service users have bonded into their own 'community' and help and aid each other in their daily lives and how cruel it would be to take that away from them and the sterling work the staff team have done at Albert Dane to support their users.
  • Cllr Ranjit Dheer (Lab, Dormers Wells, Portfolio holder - Safer Communities and Deputy Leader) waffled and prevaricated and basically said very little but wasted time in the debate.
  • Cllr Jasbir Anand (Lab, Southall Green, Portfolio Holder - Health and Adult Services) then rose to speak, amid loud heckling from the service users present she arrogantly stated that the centre was unfit for purpose and that 'those people' would be better off without it, surprising considering two things.
  • Firstly 'those people' (the service users presumably!), half of them would lose their service entirely if the centre closes; under the rules of the new fangled 'personlisation' agenda being touted by Ealing 50% of the users would end up with nothing as they would not qualify for a 'personal budget' with which to 'buy' services such as a carer or someone to transport them to activities. The remaining users would be vastly worse off as the amount of money they would have would be less and private services are much more expensive.
  • Cllr Anand is rather a hypocrite we think, considering her own mother uses a day centre.
Amid further heckling from services users and campaigners and indeed members of the public in the gallery overlooking the debating chamber; in the end the Labour group unsurprisingly voted en bloc to defeat the motion.

However the lobby did have an immediate impact. The final decision on the closure was due to be made at a meeting of the Ealing Cabinet on November 9th. Undoubtedly under the pressure of the campaign Ealing Council have decided to postpone the final decision to December 21st in order to do 'further study' into the closure.
This has now bought the campaign an extra month to organise in the borough to bring more pressure to bear on the Cabinet to stop the cuts and needless closures that would save less than the salary of the chief executive.

.....................................................................................................................................................................

STOP PRESS! The meeting to decide the final fate of the Albert Dane Centre has been yet again moved (to an as yet unknown date). More to come when we know the new date, so another lobby can be set up.......

     LONDON DEMONSTRATION
           AGAINST CUTS             SATURDAY 23rd OCTOBER

The coalition government of millionaires is ready to axe the jobs and services of working people. Nothing is safe, unless we stand up and fight back.

The London RMT, FBU, PCS, NUT, UCU and National Shop Stewards Network have called a London demonstration to march from RMT HQ to the SERTUC (South East Region TUC) Anti-Cuts Rally in Congress House.

Just days beforehand, the Con-Dem Government will announce its Comprehensive Spending Review. Bankers and their greedy system caused this crisis. Now they want working people to pay their debt, by cutting our jobs and public services, slashing our welfare benefits and pensions, and privatising our NHS, schools and Royal Mail.

This march, as part of the wider TUC week of action, gives trade unionists and local communities a chance to ‘take to the streets’ and show that we aren’t going to sit back and accept vicious cuts to jobs and services.

The march will assemble outside Unity House, 39 Chalton St, NW1 at 11am and march to Bedford Square WC1, just around the corner from Congress House. There will be speakers, including Bob Crow (RMT) and Matt Wrack (FBU), at an outdoor rally in Bedford Square
